YIA-EFOMP 2003 COMPETITION

All participants of the conference below the age of 35 years who are still a student or a trainee in medical physics or are following an education program are encouraged to join the YIA-EFOMP 2003 competition.

A 1000 Euro prize is offered to the best presentation out of three presentations, selected to be given in a plenary session of the conference. The YIA-EFOMP 2003 committee selects these three finalists from all abstracts submitted for the competition. The audience of the plenary session chooses the winner by voting.

The YIA-EFOMP 2003 competition is an excellent opportunity to present your research outside your own working/research field, to a much larger, broader and very interested audience.

BACKGROUND
During the last three annual conferences of the Dutch Society of Medical Physics, a competition for the so-called JOP was held. The JOP stands for Jonge Onderzoekers Prijs, in English the Young Investigators Award. This award was meant to stimulate the presentation of scientific work, as a part of the training and education program for medical physics. The formula, three plenary presentations and judgement by the audience, was highly appreciated by the public, mostly qualified medical physicists. The enthusiasm of the speakers in combination with interesting new research results not directly related to the own field of expertise, has attributed to the enthusiasm of the audience. Therefore in 2003 this contest will be held again, and will be open for all European medical physics students who attend the EFOMP 2003 conference in Eindhoven.

AIMS
To encourage and stimulate students and not-yet qualified medical physicists to present their scientific research for a public in a way that it is understandable and interesting for people outside their own specialised working field.

THE AWARD
A prize of 1000 Euro for the winner.

Furthermore the opportunity to present yourself, and to speak about your research for a large, broad, interested audience of diverse medical research and clinical fields.

DETAILED INFORMATION:

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants should be below the age of 35 years and should join a training or education program in medical physics at the time of the conference. This can be either a hospital- or clinic-based residency training program, or a medical physics graduate education program.

The contest is additionally open for persons who are to be accredited as qualified medical physicists in the first months of 2003, or achieve their graduation on a medical physics topic in these first months.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants should submit an abstract of their research work for the conference, in one of the conference topics. The format is thus as for the EFOMP conference. (Mention Title, author(s), affiliation, and topic of the topic list, email address. Main text consisting of a maximum of 400 words, font: Arial 11.) Additionally, apply for the competition by ticking the appropriate box in the case of web-registration or attach the line "I apply for YIA-EFOMP 2003 competition" under the abstract.

Closing Date for Applications: November 3, 2002.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Final Judging
All abstracts will be assessed by the YIA-EFOMP 2003 committee, which consists of four medical physicists from different disciplines. Three applicants will be chosen by this committee to proceed to the final stage. The three finalists will be notified of their selection by April 1st, 2003.

They will be invited to give an oral presentation of their research work to a general audience of medical physicists, in the plenary session of Friday morning, May 23, 2003. Presentations by the finalists should be no longer than 10 minutes in length with an additional two minutes for questions. All persons of the audience will judge two aspects of the presentations, 1) the (scientific) contents, and 2) the presentation skills of the speaker. Each member of the audience can give two points (one for each aspect) and the winner is the speaker who achieves most points.

Criteria for Judging:
The YIA-EFOMP 2003 committee will assess the abstracts on criteria such as the clinical application of the research, scientific content, the relevance, originality, methodology and validity of conclusions.

The audience will be asked to judge the presentation skills of the finalists on criteria as the use of appropriate audio-visual aids, clarity of presentation, engagement with audience, understandability, ability to generate enthusiasm and interest.

It is important that all presentations are adjusted sufficiently to be understandable to scientific and medical researchers from a broad range of fields.
